The rapid increase in the number of computers for Fixed Target experiments and changes for Run II computing add to the complexities of operating and managing of a large computing facility at Fermilab. The Next Generation Operations working group (NGOP) was created in Summer of 1999 in order to gather the requirements for the distributed management system capable of efficiently running Fermilab's computing facility. We were looking for pro-active tools that provide self-management of different operating systems and mission-critical applications. The requirements have been finalized by September of 1999 and the evaluation of available (commercial and freeware) products has been fulfilled by December of 1999.

Based on product evaluation the decision to develop on site Distributed Monitoring System was made. First NGOP prototype was released in January of 2001 to monitor mainly Fermilab Computing Farms.

Two subsequent pre-production releases were made in September and December of 2001 and interface to Computing Division Helpdesk system was enabled. At this time the NGOP service was monitoring about 550 nodes and 11000 quantities. NGOP is in production since September 2002.

The current version (v2_1a) was released on January 21,2004. The current production configuration consist s of 2138 nodes and 48222 quantities. The further development is halted for the time being. Configuration update happens bi-weekly. The request to add new monitored nodes/objects and/or to obtain access to NGO P Web Gui and Admin Tool should be sent to Helpdesk. The questions about NGOP should be sent to NGOP group .
